With a little help from my Forest Crew friends, I share some light-hearted thoughts and real-life insights about staying independent and making our own choices in the senior years.”
My kids come to visit with suggestions
My kids are coming to visit me to talk about possible arrangements for me in a "Assisted Living" facility. So far they have not said anything about helping me remain in my present life.

leaving because kids are coming
Since my kids topic is depressing, I decided to go camping for a couple of days with my "Forest Crew Friends" and leave the kids alone to contemplate what they want to discuss with me. We left quickly before the kids arrived.

At the campsite, my Forest Crew Friends and Faithful Cat "Liebe" (German Word for Love) make ourselves comfortable and  enjoy some happy conversation around the campfire! I Hope some time alone at the cabin will help the kids to think a little more compassionately about my future. At this point in my life I am not turning over control of my life to anyone!

When we got home the kids were gone but left a note saying they understood more now about my needs after their stay at the cabin and would not try to talk me into anything that would make me unhappy, but rather be there for me if I need a little help sometimes. My Forest Crew Friends and I celebrated by taking our canoes over to a small island on the lake for a picnic.

“At this stage of life, we often face more choices than we expected. Each path may look different, and not all are easy to understand at first. But with a little thought, a little patience, and a willingness to listen to ourselves, we can still choose the path that feels right for us. These moments are not about pressure—they are about freedom, reflection, and making decisions that honor our independence.”
👉 “The Day the Forest Crew Made a Plan and formed a local government
to save their neighbor Judith from loosing her independence."

“Some days bring quiet moments by the lake… and some bring unexpected challenges.

When Judith’s peace was threatened, the Forest Crew did what they always do—
they gathered, they listened, and they made a plan.

Because around here, independence matters…
and nobody faces things alone.”

Judith has
                  trouble

Judith, Ed's neighbor has bad and scary news that her adult kids have made arrangements to put her in a Assisted Living Home against her will. The Forest Crew listens closely and comes up with a plan to save Judith.

                  local government

The "Forest Crew" forms a local Government in order to help their neighbor Judith avoid being taken away from the Lake against her will. They elected a Mayor who appointed a Sheriff and Deputy, Vehicle Inspector with Assistant Inspector, Permits Department and then determined which laws the People coming to take Judith away have violated.

When the Assisted Living van arrived along with the 3 adult children the heads of all the new local government Departments decided local laws were being violated by the kids and Assisted Living people and the order to take Judith away was not valid.

The Assisted Living vehicle and people, and Judith's adult kids were ordered to leave the lake and never come back. That evening Ed, Judith, and all of the Forest Crew celebrated "VICTORY" and enjoyed a wonderful Victory Feast.

As a result of the Forest Crew saving Judith and her Cat, and formally establishing designated government duties for all of the crew, a new Town Hall was opened with each Forest Crew Member having their own office. The opening ceremony was witnessed by leading citizens Ed and Judith and her Cat. Now the new "Mini Town" called Lake Township was formally a real town.

🪵 Graphic 1: Building Begins

“What started as a simple idea quickly turned into something more.

Not just boards and beams… but a shared purpose.

Around here, we don’t wait for things to change.
We pick up the tools and begin.”

🌲 Graphic 2: Progress & Personalities

“As the walls went up, so did the personalities.

Some measured carefully. Some lifted more than they should.
Some inspected everything twice… and some just wanted to help.

Turns out, building something together means learning how each of us works.”

🌿 Graphic 3: Almost There

“With every board placed and every nail set,
something else began to take shape.

Not just a store… but a feeling.

Some things aren’t built with wood alone—
they’re built with time, care, and each other.”

🎉 Graphic 4: Grand Opening

“The doors opened, the lights came on,
and something new welcomed everyone in.

Not just a place to gather,
but a place that was built for all of us.

Around here, we don’t just build places…
we build a life worth staying for.

“What began as a moment of uncertainty became something far greater than anyone expected.

Together, the Forest Crew, neighbors, and friends didn’t just solve a problem—
they built a place where people could belong.

Lake Township grew not from plans on paper,
but from hands willing to help, hearts willing to care,
and a belief that independence doesn’t mean being alone.

Here, every board tells a story.
Every door opens to possibility.

And every day is another chance to build something that matters.

“Before anything new begins, it helps to know what matters most.

At Lake Township, the rules aren’t about control—
they’re about how we choose to care for one another.

Check on each other.
Leave no one behind.
And always remember… your life is your own to decide.

🌲 Graphic 2: Diner Opening (Outside)

“It didn’t take long for word to spread.

A diner of our own… built with care and ready to welcome everyone.

Some came for the food, some for the company—
but all came because it felt like something worth being part of.”

🍽️ Graphic 3: Inside the Diner

“Inside, it wasn’t just a meal being served.

It was warmth, conversation, and a place to sit a little longer than planned.

For some, it was just lunch.
For others… it was the beginning of something new.”

We talk with potential new residents to Lake Township.

🌿 Graphic 4: A Place to Stay

“What started as a simple visit became something more.

With a warm welcome and a place that felt right,
the choice became easy.

Sometimes, the first step toward belonging…
is simply being welcomed in.”

🌲 FINAL WRAP-UP NARRATIVE

“Lake Township didn’t grow because of buildings alone.

It grew because people cared enough to create a place where others could feel at home.

The diner became more than a place to eat—it became a place to meet, to share, and to begin again.

And as new faces arrived and found their place, the meaning of Lake Township became even clearer:

It’s not just where you live…
it’s where you’re welcomed, supported, and free to be yourself.

Around here, that’s what makes a place worth staying.”
